2023: Only President With Legislative, Executive, Experience Can Restructure Nigeria --- Saraki
MUMINAT MUHIBUDEEN, ABEOKUTA
Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki on Monday said only president that is highly knowledgeable in legislative, as well as executive processes can address the much talked about restructuring of the Nigerian state towards overcoming the plethora of challenges currently bedeviling her as a nation.
Saraki spoke yesterday while addressing delegates of the People Democratic Party (PDP) at the party's state Secretariat, located along the IBB Presidential Boulevard in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital ahead of the forthcoming party's convention slated for the 30th of May, 2022.
The former Kwara State governor, who is aspiring to contest the forthcoming presidential election on the platform of PDP also recommended the leadership model of former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a way out for Nigeria to enable her overcome the plethora of security and economic challenges currently bedeviling the country.
The PDP presidential hopeful bemoaned the burgeoning youths unemployment, as well as the routine loss of lives in the country due to the activities of bandits, kidnappers and insurgents.
Recalling that Nigerians were safer, with the nation's economy progressing as planned during the former President Obasanjo's administration, Saraki attributed the feat to the decisive manner with which Obasanjo tackled the nation's challenges at the time.
"We cannot say we want to vote based on sentiment. This country needs a president that has the capacity and knowledge, not a president that desires people to guide him on what to do. We need a president that can unite Nigeria because the unity of this country is very fragile now. There is nothing we can do without unity in this country. Let's look for a leader that can unite Nigeria".
"When I was S.A. to President Obasanjo, you saw what Nigeria was, how investment was coming in. We need a courageous president, we need a president that understand Medical services. If you elect me, I will ensure that Primary Healthcare is free for all. I am a man of words and actions".
"I have the capacity to do what could not be done for over a decade if given the chance to unite Nigeria. We need a president that is courageous and strong. You all know that my four years as Senate President, I stood for this country".
While assuring that he would leverage on his executive and legislative experiences, Saraki said he will successfully restructure the country without contravening the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria if eventually elected as President in 2023.
Saraki, who had earlier visited the elder statesman, Obasanjo to solicit his wisdom and advice before proceeding to meet the PDP delegates in Ogun State, said he remained the bridge between Muslims and Christians; North and South as well as old and young, noting that his mother and wife are Christians, while he remained a Muslim.
"I am a Muslim, my mother is a Christian, my wife is also a Christian. So, there will be no religious bias. You need a Nigerian for all Nigerians, not a man who will further divide Nigeria".
